Has your world turned upside down? Are you, like me, wondering how to navigate an ever-changing landscape that makes little sense? You are not alone.
The Struggle is Real
In a Facebook post a few days ago, my friend Mark Ritter (an adjunct science professor and the creative genius who kept me laughing while taking the photos on my website) explained his confusion.
I’m going to painfully oversimplify something that separates the way I was brought up from what seems to be taking over this country right now.
I was taught that 2+2 = 4. I could see that two two’s actually made 4. It made sense. It was logical. I could pretend that it would equal five but I’d be wrong. And it would be right for somebody to say I was wrong. The truth is that they equal 4.
It seems now that 2+2 equals whatever you want. As long as you FEEL you have the right answer, that’s all that really matters. 2+2 might equal elephant. It doesn’t matter how ludicrous that seems, if a person feels it’s true then who am I to say otherwise?
I am a creature who loves logic and reason and sees the inherent beauty in them. They help me discern right from wrong, even if I don’t want to believe it. It’s healthy.
But today not a whole lot of people believe in that. And I’m struggling.
Ritter’s post reminded me of my own struggle over the so-called Equality Act.” Using simple logic, it just doesn’t add up.
This misnomer isn’t about equality. In fact, I’ve never seen anything less so. If passed, this intolerant legislation will elevate the rights of a miniscule minority of transgender folks over a vast majority of women. Females who ovulate. Menstruate. Get pregnant. Breastfeed. No matter who claims that men can “chestfeed” or may need a tampon, biological men are not biological women. They may have a wonderful God-given softer/gentler side. They may be inclined to dress like a woman or a man or have surgery to change their outward appearance, but in reality they do not have the same DNA as the opposite sex.
Science supports the truth of Genesis 1:27. “God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”
Yet some men feel like women. Or a woman might feel like a man. That’s true. I get that and don’t doubt such feelings can be complicated. They may even lead to many challenging situations. But every human being has different feelings based on varied experiences, so they aren’t an appropriate means for legislation that impacts all of society. Can you imagine the oppression women and girls will experience if this irresponsible Act is put into practice?
Stripping Away Women’s Rights
When Neema Suratger carried the flag for Afghanistan during the opening ceremony of the 2004 Olympics in Athens, tears of joy streamed down my face. Suratger, who ran a “secret” school to educate girls during the reign of the Taliban, was one of three women to represent Afghanistan for the first time in Olympic history. She said:
It was a proud moment for all three of us – to proclaim the rights of Afghan women as other women around the world have claimed their rights.
Now, if this Act passes the Senate as it already has the House, American women will no longer have any rights to claim. As athletes, much-admired women sports figures like Serena Williams and UCLA’s Nia Dennis will no longer be allowed to compete on a level-playing field. Whenever a biological male who is convinced he’s a woman, wants to compete, he’ll have the opportunity to rob them of their trophies. Just as it happened in 2019 when a transgender woman won an NCAA woman’s track national championship providing a first for that New Hampshire school in an individual sport. That victory may well incentivize colleges to recruit transgender women, giving them scholarships previously awarded to biological women.
And, it won’t just be athletes. In a Breakpoint piece for the Colson Center on February 24, 2021, John Stonestreet said:
To be clear, you should only care about the Equality Act if you are a Christian, or a person of faith, or a woman, or own a business, or run a non-profit, or go to school, or teach at a school, or are a medical or mental-health professional, or (especially) are a female athlete, or under the age of 18, or ever use a public restroom. That’s not an exaggeration.
You can find the exact wording of the Act here. While admitting women have experienced many discriminatory challenges, this piece of legislation illogically sends women’s rights back into the dark ages. It’s dangerous and not only for women.
Indoctrinating Children with Gender Identity Confusion
Because of their youth and innocence, children need adults to provide for them, to care about their general health and well-being while protecting them from those who might harm them. Instead the “Equality Act” places them at the mercy of a minority of people in conflict over their gender identity. Rather than allowing the innocence of little boys (some with a softer gentler side) and girls (possibly tomboys as I was), children are being taught about a separation between biological sex at birth and gender identity using a cute and enticing unicorn. It’s no wonder so many children are confused.
In addition, the “Equality Act” permits those who claim to be transgender women, even when dressed as men, to enter public restrooms, quite likely terrifying that little nine-year old girl, who needs her privacy. Or an 18-year-old boy claiming to “feel” like a woman can enter the locker room where a fourteen-year-old girl is showering.” What’s to keep a predator from lying to open the doors that will provide access to prey upon the young and innocent?
Exchanging Cultural Lies for Rock-Solid Truth
For some reason, I decided to Google the claim that 2 + 2 = 5, just to see if Ritter might have been referring to something I wasn’t aware of. The results probably shouldn’t have been so shocking, but they were. Still, they were quite relevant to my concerns.
In her August 3, 2020 article, “Woke Twitter users argue that 2 + 2 = 5 with no hint of irony at all,” Libby Emmons explains the doublespeak.
The eradication of basic mathematical principles, the push for people to believe what they are told to believe as opposed to that which is logical, reasoned, and proven, is a push toward creating more manageable humans that will be more susceptible to authoritarian control.
At first glance, the topics of mathmatical principles and gender legislation might not seem related. Yet in her book, Love Thy Body: Answering Hard Questions about Life and Sexuality, Nancy Pearcy expresses a connection with governmental control. A control that extends beyond women to the entire family. To make her point, Pearcey quotes Stella Morabito, senior contributor to The Federalist:
Once you basically redefine humanity as sexless you end up with a de-huanized society in which there can be no legal ‘mother’ or ‘father’ or ‘son’ or ‘daughter’ or ‘husband’ or ‘wife’ without permission from the State (p. 212).
Sound familiar? Nancy Pelosi has already introduced her intention to erase these terms from the 117th Congress.
Pearcey explains the consequences:
The state will then have unprecedented power to micromanage families. . . The state can make decisions regarding how parents educate their children, what medical treatment they use, what discipline they enforce, and so on, far beyond any current regulations.
More fundamentally, the state can decide who counts as a child’s parents to begin with. Until now, it was nature (biological relaitonship) that defined who counts as a parent. The state saw its role as merely recognizing this natural reality. But under SOGI [Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity] laws there will no longer be a presumption in favor of the child’s biological parents.
When gender is de-naturalized, parenthood will also be de-naturalized (p. 212, 213).
That’s terrifying, and it’s already happening. Consider school counselors taking young girls for abortions without parental notification. Or perhaps a well-meaning teacher encouraging the use of hormone blockers for a confused child.
Regardless of who claims 2 + 2 = 5, it still equals 4. When millions of people believe a lie, it’s still a lie. A God of order created a complex and elegant realm that runs on laws of logic and reason. We know the truth even when people try to promote illogical and destructive ideology. Romans 1:18-23 reveal the consequences of mindlessly accepting self-destructive constructs that harm society.
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not ]honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.
Ritter’s Facebook post made me think. I hope this post impacted you enough to make your voice heard in regards to the “Equality Act.” If so, do it now! Contact your Senator today. The Senate could be voting at any time. If you don’t want to explain your opposition to the Act, and you agree with my points, you could paste the link to this post into your email. Seeing the logic may help those of either political party be more aware of the disastrous impact this legislation can have on our society.
